OVERVIEW OF CRAZY HOUSE

Welcome to Hang Nga Villa, which is known as Crazy House, one of the most unique and strange architectural works in the world. The owner of this House is Madam DANG VIET NGA. She is also known as the daughter of the late General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Mr. Truong Chinh. She graduated from Moscow University specializing in Architecture in 1965 and then she studied further to gain a doctorate in 1972. After that, she went back to Hanoi and worked in the Ministry of Construction and Culture. Until 1983, she moved to Dalat where the cool climate, beautiful spots, peace and fresh air, made her decide to spend the rest of her life here.

Mr. Truong Chinh named her Dang Viet Nga. Viet Nga means the Moon Lady of Vietnam. Because of that meaningful name, she decided to name her house Hang Nga when it was built in 1990. When the Hang Nga Villa became quite famous throughout Dalat, some other people also took this name for their houses. Therefore, Dr. Nga had wanted to change her house to another name. Since opened to the public, it has attracted many visitors from around the world and brought them many thoughts, and when being asked about their feelings toward the House, “Crazy” is the most common word that they use to describe their feelings. This inspired Dr. Nga to name her creation “Crazy House”.

Dr. Nga is one of the pioneering female architects who have introduced new and innovative ideas into architecture, despite many difficulties, she still maintained her constancy and gradually had Crazy House built. By “the language of architectural art”, she wants to send to the public one main message that humans need to always love and protect nature and the environment so that people and nature can always live together in harmony. That's why her house is designed in the image of an ancient tree house nestled among flora, or the stair in the shape of tree trunks or tree roots binding the tree house together to form a giant forest. Especially inside the tree house, Dr. Nga has created rooms with different themes such as Bamboo, Termite, Gourd, Kangaroo, and Land Eagle... and while staying in those tree houses, visitors can feel close to and live with wild nature.

The freedom and extravagance in Dr. Nga's architectural art extends not only to the ancient forest with its tree houses and unique rooms, but also manifests through expanded works such as the Ocean in Highland, the Garden of Eden, the Garden of Paradise, and statues conveying various messages and meanings.

All of Dr. Dang Viet Nga's architectural works demonstrate the limitless nature of human creativity, and to realize one’s dreams, one needs to have the courage to face all difficulties and challenges to try best for those dreams.
