THE MEANING OF THE SCULPTURES IN THE SPIDER WEB GARDEN

The main theme of Crazy House is “To live in harmony with nature”. Madam Nga conveyed this idea by setting up a big stilt house (the Rong House) surrounded by a lot of trees and three giant tree trunks with sculptures of humans. Wandering around this place, you can notice that this setting imitates a small community with the activities of daily life as well as with the types of emotions “joy, anger, love, hate'’.

The boy going to school and the girl playing the drum:

These two sculptures were created after the foundation of Crazy House in 1990. The sculpture of “The boy going to school" talks about an important children’s right - the right to be educated. Madam Nga hoped that all children are well educated to fully develop awareness, thinking, skills as well as senses of morality. Besides learning, children should be engaged in recreation, leisure, and sports activities.

The contemplating woman:

Madam Đặng Việt Nga created the sculpture “The contemplating woman" in 1990 with the purpose of self-portraying. When she moved to Dalat, she had to deal with a difficult living condition. It was getting harder when she started to build Crazy House; financing and administrative formalities were the matters of concern. Stepping out of her comfort zone and living with her own dream was a tough challenge; however, she didn't give up. “Finish what you start", “We grow when we face challenges” and “We decide our own fate" are her life mottos. Hence, the sculpture is not only about her burden but also her indomitable spirit.

The two-faced man:

The two-faced man sculpture is a gift which was given to Mr. Truong Chinh (Madam Dang Viet Nga’s father) by an Australian visitor. You can find this gift in the memorial room of her father. Being inspired by the meaning of the sculpture, Madam Viet Nga decided to make a bigger version of it. There are always two sides to every person - good and evil, mature, and childlike. Sometimes we show our true personality and sometimes we just hide it. Therefore, it's not easy to understand yourself and others.
